ANCYL mourns the death of struggle veteran and former minister Cde Zola Skweyiya

11 April 2018

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) mourns the death of struggle veteran and longstanding leader of the ANC, Cde Zola Skweyiya. Cde Skweyiya passed away today 11 April 2018.

Cde Skweyiya passes away whilst his organization, the ANC, and people of South Africa at large and world, are mourning the death of our revered "Mother of the Nation", Cde Winifred Nomzamo Mandela. We extend our deepest condolences to Cde Skweyiya`s family, friends, colleagues, ANC, ANC Veterans League and mass democratic movement as a whole.

In Cde Skweyiya the ANC has lost one of its razor-sharp thinkers, a paragon of political correctness and ethical leadership, selfless servant of our people and a distinguished diplomat. Cde Skweyiya was a fountain of wisdom and a reservoir of organizational memory and knowledge.

His sad passing is a setback to our efforts of fostering principled and genuine unity within the ANC and broader Alliance for a successful triumph of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR). In his memory the ANCYL commits in preserving his legacy by being at the centre of struggles faced by the youth of South Africa, to deal decisively with the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment, and build a future that brings a life of dignify for all.

Cde Skweyiya was a close friend of the Youth League; always encouraged different generation of leaders of the Youth League to express themselves freely and be critical voices within the ANC. He was a fierce critic of criminalization of dissent and saw the Youth League as a school of excellence for future leaders of the ANC and country at large. Indeed we lost a mentor and a commissar.

As the Youth League we find solace in the fact that Cde Skweyiya will now be in the capable hands of other decorated stalwarts of the ANC and celebrated martyrs of our struggle in the land of the departed, such as Cde Johnny Mafanafuthi Makhathini; Duma Nokwe; Jossie Mpama; Dorothy Nyembe; Ashley Kriel; Linda Jobane; Andrew Zondo and countless others. Cde Skweyiya is gone, but joins the immortal on in ideas!
